Barrel Sponge Spawning August 1

August 1, 2008 is the new moon....great for personal renewal, but even better for the annual barrel sponge spawning process. This is an ANNUAL process, it is not a monthly process and we will be out looking to see if we can capture some great photos for those who sadly can not be here. But it might be worth a quick trip to Mexico to see this unique event.

Barrel sponges are a unique animal. On our famous 'Tortuga Reef' we have hundreds of barrel sponges that are big and small, colourful or not, what I am going to call 'decorated' meaning lots of great texture, and some that are not 'decorated'.

Photos of the male barrel sponge spawning and fema releasing eggs

This annual event is pretty spectacular, as the enclosed photos show...the smoking look is a display of the male sponge sending sperm out into the ocean, the white gucky stuff on the other photo is the female releasing her eggs. What is interesting about the barrel sponge is that they can decide whether they are the male at this time of year and release sperm, or the female to release eggs. On alternate years, they can switch..so if they are tired of being a guy...they change and if they are tired of being a woman, they change...and somehow in this maze of underwater ecology, everyone seems to choose the right 'sex' at the right time so that there is a good mix of male and female releases...could you image if the underwater trend was to be female and there were no males to fertilize the released eggs, and how the heck do they know who decides to be male or female, so that they actually get it right....oh the ownders of the universe, above and below water....how fasinating that there seems to not be a lack of communication and everyone gets their 'job' right...
The underwater world truly is an amazing place, not only in beauty but in communication..there is no internet, no phones and no 'known' language but they seem to always get it right....is there something that we can learn from this. My gut says yes, but hey who knows...the observations are amazing.

HELLO DOLLY!

This is a blog about reassurance.....A Tropical Storm named 'Dolly' is heading this way as of 10:32 pm our time...the newspapers have all got a hold of it and we, at the Abyss Dive Center are going to give you the digs...right now...and then update in a few hours...

As of right now, we are sitting in our houses, and there is no wind, currently no rain and no activity on the streets. In case you have read the news, which is why we are posting, the Govenor of Quintana Roo, which includes the cities of Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum and Chetumal, has ordered a 'ley seca', a dry law so that means THERE IS NO BEER BEING SOLD....all bars are closed, so what are we supposed to do now! The whole fun of a Tropical Storm is waiting with friends for this to blow over...none of that is happening here!!!

Okay backto the weather report...there was some rain today, this morning at 9 20 am there was a huge storm that lasted for about 12 minutes....the ocean is rough, moveable objects have been put to rest, meaning the umbrellas in the hotel went into storage, and we put our waterprrof speakers undercover so they wont get too wet...this is the only preparation that we have had to do...other than maybe stocking up on beer which, was not done....as no one knew it was going to happen, the dry law that is...

Back to weather, sorry we keep getting sidetracked about beer....seriously folks there is no wind, not an ounce....so we will wait this one out....and see where Dolly ends up...so no panicking, no worries, don't let the international papers, which we have scanned and see the inconsistancies of the reports....I think we have had as much rain as Toronto received today, in fact they may have recieved more...the ocean is fine, wavey but fine and we are all going to bed...there is nothing else to do as...there is no beer.....

So don't let the reports scare you, dont let the newspaper make you think we are currently drowning in tons of water, and overflowing with rain, the only inconvenience is we can not seem to get the laundry dry....as the rain is just enough that any clothes on the clothsline are not getting dry....

We are fine as of 10. 43 pm and if the rain wakes us up we will post and let you know....love the media....they are reporting armies, gas lines, food lines etc....I think I have a half a bun, some cucumber, a half tomato and some mayo in the fridge, with, yes, one beer.....on cold can of Sol...dont tell Dave, it is all mine.....

Old but new ONline Dive Magazine

Our duty as a dive center is to keep you informed about diving. This blog is our way of sending up to date material that is at your fingertips so that you dont have to search for it. WE try, selfishly, to give you news about the Mexican Caribbean, cenotes and cave diving. No one said we were perfect, but that is our intent.

Many months ago, we came across a super interesting online dive mag called Xray www.xray-mag.com which has some interesting flora and fauna information, dive gear reviews and travel reviews. In their 15th edition, the Mayan Riviera, that is us!, was featured. http://x-ray-mag.com/X-Ray_Magazine_Issue_16 yes it says issue 16 on the link but it really, technically is Edition 15....

This is an article on the cenotes or as some refer to them, caverns, which we are famous for in the area. The pictures are super, the information great and it will give you a nice overview of the cavern and cave diving experience.

Now I dont know if you all know, but our very own Hotel Tropical CasaBlanca has an onsite cave and a small exposed area where there are turtles and fish. The turtles annually lay eggs, this year we have seen over 7 eggs layed in the sand by the cenote and last year we gave birth to three baby turtles. So it is alive and well and a great addition to your experience and understanding of this unique area.

For those who dont know what a cenote/cavern is....let us unlighten you as it is one of the main diving reasons our divers come to visit! Lets put aside for a moment, that we dive in an ocean that has visiblity of 30meters , that the average watertemperature is 80F28C, that there are numerous fish, turtles and corals, and that we dive on the second largest barrier reef in the world...the attraction to the area besides all of this (how could there be more) is the caverns.

We call the caverns 'cenotes', and this really confuses people. So let us define really what we are talking about without getting into too much detail, or suffice a book written on this blog. Cenote is the spanish transation from the Mayan word D'znot, both meaning sacred waters. The english translation for the cenotes is cavern, a technical word that describes the actual geology of these areas. A cavern has an opening and maintains a visible source of light once a person enters. It is an overhead environment which means that there is not direct exit to the surface of the earth, and in diving terms, no direct exit to the surface.

A cave is a place where the entering person does not maintain a source of light, has an overhead environment and can have portions where only person can pass through the area at a time...not always but in some instances. This is called a restriction. A cavern allows in all areas the passage of two people together, there fore adding another dimension into its definition.

Everywhere in the world has dry and wet caverns and caves, the difference for us is that we have submersed caverns that can be explored with open water recreational divers in a safe and standardized way. In other international locations, only submerged caves exist making the excursion only safe for certified Cave divers, a technical certification that takes over 8 days and requires that the student have a minimum of rescue diver and over 60 dives.

So how are Mexican caverns safe for recreational open water divers and international caves not? A cavern means that there is a source of light, or in our case an exit no more than 55meters from any point in the dive. The caverns in the area, and not all can be explored by recreational divers as they do not satisfy this standard for save cavern diving, do have this naturally, as there are natural openings in the caverns that allow us to keep within a site of light....The porousness of the limestone in this area, enables the standards of cavern diving to be met....this does not exist anywhere else internationally...no where else. The standards also state that recreational divers have to be escorted by a certified cave diver who is your guide, and there are equipment and air standards that must be followed. This makes for safe cavern diving, and guides in the area follow these rules, including the property owners of the cenotes. The self regulation system of the public cenotes is incredible, including our 'do not touch' regulation in the caverns. Allof these ingredients make for a super great and safe diving experience that we can safely say is not had anywhere else in the world.

So this is one feature of diving in the Mayan Riviera. Cenotes, caverns and for those technically certified, cave diving. It is unique, exceptional, exisite and most of all beautiful. It is what sets us apart from other diving locations, not to mention the fact that we are great at what we do, love what we do, and love the ocean as well as the cenotes. But we will let you be the judge of that when you visit. The semi book on cavern diving is now done...hope you enjoyed and hope we clarified something for you. Further questions, if you have any can posted as comments on the blog as everyone can learn from the questions of others.

Thank God for the Brits!!!!

I am on a roll, and this now is the coolest picture I have seen since my last one, posted 24 hours ago. The daily Telegraph reported, very briefly on the migration of over 10,000 rays (i beleive they call them eagle rays...not) from Florida to The Gulf Of Mexico. This is an annual event folks, and I want to see it!!!! And I am sure that you too would love to witness this amazing fleet of rays moving through the water.
This is the link to the article. It is just a mention of the migration pattern, and I have no idea how I am going to find it, but your help would be greatly appreciated. Other than the great picture I posted the other day, this is truly a beauty.
Now we all know that the WhaleSharks migrate each year from Honduras to The Gulf Of Mexico in May and then return in September. See my post in June. The annual migration pattern of the rays in my mental files is not known yet, but let me see what I can do to dig up some information. I think I am going to start drinking the Gulf Of Mexico water as there obviously is something spectacular in it that encourages the annual migration of some of the most incredible species in the world. Maybe I will turn into a mermaid, how great would that be.
I have to state the ironic part of me discoverying this article, though I should not mention it as my eco-consconscience is tweeking madly. On the same page that I found this amazing, wonderful article, I also found one about the discovery of the largest oil field found to date in the Gulf of Mexico....gasp! so lets not discuss it, lets not talk about it, I just had to mention this little eco-irony to the research.
So who ever took this, and this time I have to honour the British, thank you for this wonderful display of migration, in such a beautiful, beautiful photo. God Save the Queen.....

New Scuba Site For Women only......

We came across a new scuba site the other day that is super fun, women only, (sorry guys I will try and find a male only site for the next blog). Miss Scuba http://www.miss-scuba.com/ created by Szilvia Gogh, is a nice way to find other women to dive with, swap stories with and find combined trips to go on.

This is not new. There are other websites out there that also promote diving for women.... http://www.divegirl.com and http://www.divebunnie.com/ What these sites do is hook up female divers with other female divers for trips, they celebrate women's courage (??) for getting into the sport, they also have wetsuits and great equipment designed for women...no more getting into a mans suit that does not fit well...though Bare wetsuits in canada has a great female cut that will fit like a glove...they are great....Most of the sites have forums so if there are any female related dive questions, these are the places to go.
What is unique about the Miss Scuba site is the networking of women across the globe through profiles and photos....so female instructors can unite internationally, or if you had a great female instructor and would like to dive with her again you might be able to search for her on Miss Scuba! Go to the site and add your profile so that you can meet other women who love to dive!

Szilvia is a great networker herself so if you have inquiries she seems to be the one. Ask away or check out her site to see if there is anything of interest for you. And I will look for a male only site for you men out there.....deservingly so you also need your own site....or collection of sites that celebrate your diving and your love for the sport of diving.....

If you were hoping to get your partner involved in diving, this may be the ticket for you....it is super when a couple can dive together on vacation, it makes it soooo much easier...so if your partner as any hesitation send them to the female portals so thay they can have encouragement from others as to why scuba diving is so much fun!!!!

Appreciation for the Sport of Diving

We are all divers, this is the common thread that gets you to read this blog, when we post, HEHEHEHEH, but today I saw something that made me realize what it is that we love to do.....

is an amazing, amazing sport! If you look really really closely at this photo, and i can not credit anyone for it, as i dont know who took it, there is a diver kneeling under the wreck...a little bitty diver that is nothing compared to this wreck under the ocean. We can do this, we do do this every day. Well our customer do it a few times per year and we love you for it. This is not only a sport but the coolest thing in the world!!!! We see things that a lot of people can not see, which makes us appreciate the ocean, the atmosphere, the species that exist even when we can not see them. How great is that. We are priviledged as divers and some days when we think we had a bad dive, meaning, oh yeah i saw another fish, i saw another morey eel, how could a bad dive be a bad dive....i truly believe now that a bad dive can not exist. Just having the freedom to be underwater, to see one thing, one fish, or just revel in the water, with no feeling of weight, has got to make every dive a great dive....Diving is a priviledge, we are able to see things that most people can not, we get to see things interact that other people may not have a clue about. We get to breathe through a regulator and hear our breathe. That in itself is a a priviledge...and should not be taken lightly.

I love this picture and share it, please as i think it is a great demonstration of why we love to dive. Diver, a wreck, in the water no noise only an alter thanking whomever for the opportunity to see this....first hand without any interference. I am going to casa cenote tomorrow to get wet, anyone want to come....
